Tips on Landing a Job from Behaviour Interactive

Behaviour Interactive's Barbara Carnet, Yasmine Marhoum, and Marie-Eve Tetreault explained how to deal with the emotional impact of losing a job, shared some portfolio tips that can help find a job more quickly, and gave advice for programmers who wish to join the company.

In today's edition of the "Tips on Landing a Job" series, we had the opportunity to interview Barbara Carnet, Behaviour Interactive's Talent Acquisition Business Partner and Senior Technical Recruiter, along with Yasmine Marhoum, Talent Acquisition Specialist, and Marie-Eve Tetreault, Talent Acquisition Business Partner and Technical Recruiter, who shared their insights on coping with job loss and offered valuable guidance for programmers seeking employment in the game industry. Strategies for Coping with the Emotional Impact of Losing a Job

First of all, we should make clear that layoffs haven’t been the case at Behaviour. In fact, we’ve grown our workforce and are hiring. That said, getting laid off is a very shocking experience for anyone. While everyone is different, it’s important to be able to press "pause" and take a break to process the news, and for the initial emotions to wear off. This could be anywhere from taking a weekend, a week, or as much time as you feel you need for yourself.

On the bright side, the demand for talent in the gaming industry is high and this is even more true when it comes to programmers. Take a look at the different job sections of your favorite studios (such as Behaviour!) and even if no position is available, send in your resume anyway because you never know when a position will open up.

Portfolio Tips That Can Help Programmers Find Jobs More Quickly

When applying to roles or reaching out to a recruiter, you want to make sure that your most recent and relevant projects to the role are at the top of your resume or portfolio. Highlighting technologies that you are the most comfortable with, and that align with the role you are applying to, can help you stand out.

Participating in Open-Source Projects

Participating in open-source projects on GitHub that you can share in your resume or portfolio is a great way to showcase your skills during any part of the recruitment process.

If Finding the Right Job Is Taking Longer Than Anticipated

We would recommend spending some time learning new technologies, whether it’s getting up to date or focusing on technologies that are high in demand. There are a lot of online resources, classes, and certificates to develop new skills. Working on personal projects is also a great way to showcase that you are keeping current with new technologies and are passionate about programming!

Also, even if there are no positions available, send your resume anyway – things can change quickly and you may get a call sooner than you think.  

How Studios Can Help Programmers Adapt to Changes in the Industry

Companies should always offer ongoing knowledge and development programs to keep their programmers (or the expertise of other employees) up to date. This can be done by offering individual or group training, workshops, lunch & learns, etc., and by creating opportunities for programmers to keep up with new technologies.
