Ubisoft Blames Ads in Assassin's Creed on a Technical Glitch

The team claims that they addressed the issue as soon as they heard about it.

Earlier today we reported on a recent controversy involving game developer Ubisoft that revolved around showing pop-up ads for Assassin's Creed Mirage in Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

Upon discovering this questionable advertising approach, the wider community strongly condemned this form of promotion, with some users stating that even a single instance of encountering such a banner would be enough for them to consider deleting the game altogether.

Responding to the unfolding drama, Ubisoft issued an official statement claiming that the pop-up ad for Mirage was only a technical glitch, which, according to Ubisoft's spokesperson Fabien Darrigue, was promptly resolved upon receiving the first reports from users.

"We have been made aware that some players encountered pop-up ads while playing certain Assassin's Creed titles yesterday," Darrigues told The Verge. "This was the result of a technical error that we addressed as soon as we learned of the issue."

Apart from the concise statement, Ubisoft has been relatively silent on the details surrounding the alleged "technical error." Many are strongly inclined to believe that it might not have been a glitch, and the statement was issued as a response to the unexpectedly intense backlash, possibly in an effort to mitigate potential damage. The belief can hardly be called unsubstantiated, given the lack of concrete evidence confirming that the ad was genuinely caused by a malfunction.
