This Funny Trombone Rig Looks Adorably Alive

Noah Li was inspired by Chris Crenshaw.

Have a look at this cute trombone rig that Noah Li set up in Maya. Inspired by Chris Crenshaw, he gave the instrument more character in its cartoonish movements.

The process was not as simple as it might seem, however.

"The problem I encountered is the slide can be variable length but deformation must stay continuous without mesh poking through the slide. Deformers on one shared SplineIK curve seem the most accurate solution, but restrictive posing-wise. Control for each curve vertex is untenable, and the curve needs a high number of vertices to match the deformers. Various stretchy setups don't accommodate one section sliding over the other," he shared on LinkedIn.

Despite that, Li managed to make something unique and funny. If you'd like to explore his other works, visit his LinkedIn and Vimeo.
