The Next God of War Game Might be Set in Egypt

Two pantheons down, many more to go.

It seems Kratos might finally have to shave his beard as he and Atreus leave the icy landscapes of Scandinavia for the warmer climate of northeastern Africa, with a recent insider report suggesting that Sony Santa Monica's next God of War game might be set in Egypt.

By now, it's no secret that Santa Monica is working on a yet-unannounced title, as evident from the studio's job postings and the LinkedIn profiles of its developers. While it's rumored that the next project is being led by Cory Barlog, who worked on all previous God of War titles, including the original trilogy, it remains uncertain whether the studio's next project will continue the iconic series or introduce an entirely new IP.

Lending credence to the speculation that SM will remain solely dedicated to the GoW franchise is a report from industry insider Daniel "DanielRPK" Richtman, whose latest update on Santa Monica's next AAA title speculates on the game's setting. According to Daniel (via VISCERAL), Sony is currently casting Middle Eastern actors for an undisclosed project, which purportedly is going to be a new God of War game centered on Egyptian mythology. If true, this could mean we might soon see Kratos walking like an Egyptian over the corpses of Amun-Ra, Osiris, Horus, Anubis, and Kek – an idea Sony Santa Monica considered nearly a decade ago while deciding on the setting for the 2018 God of War.

As is always the case with insider reports and the necessity to keep one's sources anonymous, it is currently impossible to say for certain whether Daniel's findings will ultimately prove accurate.

Earlier reports, for example, claimed that the studio's next game would be an entirely new IP unrelated to God of War, however, Glauco Longhi's LinkedIn page, on which those reports were based, has since been edited and now says "their new unannounced project" instead of " their new IP." Couple that with the fact that Egypt was already on Santa Monica's radar when they were rebooting the series, and it sure seems like the next God of War installment taking us to the land of the pharaohs is at the very least plausible.
