The First Look at IlluGen: JangaFX's New Tool for VFX in Games & Tech Art

The 1.0 version of the tool is set to launch in Summer 2025.

After first teasing its upcoming tool IlluGen back in January and keeping much of it under wraps since then, JangaFX has now pulled back the curtain and provided the first in-depth look at the new application, detailing its capabilities, workflows, and the reasons behind its creation.

Speaking during the recent Q2 2025 Live Stream (timestamp 23:22), JangaFX CEO Nick Seavert described IlluGen as a node-based visual effects software designed specifically for video games, combining the best aspects and strengths of tools like Houdini, Photoshop, Substance 3D Designer, 3ds Max, Maya, and other VFX solutions into one convenient package.

According to Nick, version 1.0 of IlluGen is set to launch sometime this summer, with core features including the ability to generate procedural 2D textures, a dedicated toolset for 3D mesh generation, support for hand-painted textures, and Flipbook encoding and decoding. Eventually, the software will also include destruction simulation capabilities, although there’s currently no clear timeline for when that feature will be added.

To demonstrate the capabilities of IlluGen, Nick also shared a breakdown of the Diablo-style mana orb he showcased earlier this month.
