Esben Oxholm showcased his latest Vellum experiment.
Esben Oxholm, whose work we've previously featured on 80 Level, has revealed a new project so realistic it's hard to believe it's 3D, thanks to the shake and movement inconsistencies.
The setup includes 81,752 simulated hairs, with some static ones in the background. These Houdini curls were simulated on an AMD Ryzen Threadripper and took approximately 5.5 hours to complete, with 16 substeps implemented to prevent any intersection between the comb and the hairs.
Esben also revealed that his Bichon Frise inspired this shot and shared the node tree, so you can check it out yourself here. He also shared a behind-the-scenes look at the setup with the huge comb to prove it's really 3D:
