Rhino Fur Simulation Rendered with Houdini's Karma

Albert Ma was inspired by an extinct species.

Have a look at this fur simulation CFX artist Albert Ma set up on a rhino in Houdini. A furry rhino sounds strange nowadays, but the creator was inspired by the woolly rhinoceros, an extinct species that lived in northern Eurasia.

The animation, textures, and camera were done by Nav Singh, lead animator at Pixomondo, while Ma perfected the fur.

If you want to see how the project started and is still going, visit Ma's website, where he is exploring the possibilities and trying to find answers to questions that artists should ask themselves, like what to do in different production scenarios, how to optimize groom simulation, and how to simulate the character.
