Remedy Used Kaleidoscopes, Cigarettes, and Hair Gel in Development of Alan Wake 2

Remedy shared they used a glass prism and even hair gel on the camera lens to achieve the desired effect in Alan Wake 2.

Finnish studio Remedy has revealed further exclusive information about a long-awaited sequel to Alan Wake. As part of a separate interview with the latest issue of Play Magazine, Sam Lake, the studio's director, and English dubbing actor Doug Cockle discussed several scenes from the motion capture process.

Fans are anticipating the active mixing of gameplay with live footage in Alan Wake 2. Similar techniques were used in Control, in the visions of the main character. But now, according to the interview, the developers want to go much further, actively including captured footage into the actual gameplay. Examples of such mixing can be found in the scenes from the demo shown in Summer Game Fest when FBI Agent Saga Anderson’s materials are based on real photographs, including the actor Doug Cockle.

"I really love using filmed video material," Sam Lake told Play, adding that Remedy has "certainly taken a different stab at it" across its games.

During the filming, the developers tried to produce "live-action" special effects. For example, they placed a glass prism on the camera lens to break up the image and give it a kaleidoscopic effect. They also recreated a dreamy atmosphere by putting hair gel on the lens. Coffee, juice, and cigarettes were also used for the footage. "The goal with the blended stuff has been to find stylization," Lake told Play, "and how to really weave it into the gameplay and experience as part of it."

Alan Wake 2 is due for release on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on 17 October 2023. And it will take more than 20 hours to complete.
