The project was set up to learn more about Pyro and Vellum solvers.
Sana Karimi, an experienced Graphist and aspiring VFX Artist, has recently showcased a realistic-looking 3D simulation achieved with Houdini, a procedural 3D software for modeling, rigging, animation, VFX, look development, lighting, and rendering developed by SideFX.
Created with the goal of learning more about the world of visual effects, the new project depicts a lifelike burning cloth, complete with an impressive fire simulation and a wind-blown cloth simulation. According to Sana, the simulation was set up to have a closer look and experiment with Pyro, Houdini's volumetric fluid simulation solver, widely used for creating fire, smoke, and explosions, and Vellum, a simulation framework that can be used to create cloth, hair, softbodies, balloons, grains, and more.

And if you want to learn more about how Houdini's Pyro and Vellum can be used for creating realistic 3D simulations, we highly recommend checking out our interview with FX Artist JJ Sun, who shared a comprehensive breakdown of the Hurricane Simulation project, explained how the destructible building was set up, discussed the environmental effects, and showed how the simulation was rendered in Houdini Solaris using the USD pipeline.
