Take a look at the new strand-based hair and fur system in Unreal Engine 4 that works in real-time.
Epic Games har recently released version 4.24 for Unreal Engine that gave us a first look at the new hair and fur system. The system allows artists to create realistic hair and fur with the strand-based approach in real-time.
The new features allow:
to import an Alembic (.abc) groom from tools like Maya or 3ds Max
to create and set up Groom Components
to edit Hair Materials
to set up hair physics by using Niagara
Developers shared an overview of how this tool can be implemented and showed a basic workflow in it.
Don't forget to check the Hair Rendering and Simulation Quick Start guide to get more details of the production process.
Charles de Rousiers, a rendering engineer at EA DICE, worked on the update and shared his first approach to it.
Charles also mentioned that this is an experimental version, and “the goal was to put everything in place rather than focusing on specific performance at the moment".
You can watch the tool in action here.
