At the same time, the game's review score leaves much to be desired.
Monster Hunter Wilds, a highly-anticipated action RPG and the continuation of Capcom's Monster Hunter series, has finally been released, becoming the polar opposite of last week's Avowed – with its glowing reviews but measly player numbers – by cementing itself among the most simultaneously played games of all time, yet leaving much to be desired when it comes to user feedback.
Capcom
On its release date, Monster Hunter Wilds managed to amass nearly a million concurrent players on Steam – 987,482 to be precise – beating the records of Monster Hunter: World with 334K and Monster Hunter Rise with 231K.
On top of that, it also became the eighth-most played game on Steam of all time, surpassing Elden Ring's 953K and pushing New World: Aeternum out of the Top 10. Factoring in players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, it's safe to say the game has for sure broken the one million barrier, undeniably securing its spot as the best Monster Hunter title in Capcom's eyes.
As for players' eyes, however, not everything is sunshine and rainbows, and at the moment, the game's rating on Steam stands at Mixed, with only 40% of user reviews being positive. As is unfortunately common with many AAA titles these days, Wilds' main issues center around optimization, performance, bugs, and crashes – classic "launch day plagues" that will likely be patched in future updates but are nonetheless damaging for players' enjoyment and, by extension, the game's reputation within the gaming community by being present in the first place.
Moreover, players have also criticized the game for featuring Denuvo, with some even blaming it for the above-mentioned performance and optimization problems. Even if it's not the cause, the controversial DRM has become a deal-breaker for many in recent years, so it's not surprising that a sizeable number of negative reviews stem from its inclusion.
