Kei Kanamori offered an inside look at creating the film based on the techniques used in actual origami art.
Kei Kanamori, who recently made history as the first Japanese winner of a Student Academy Award for his stunning origami animation featuring traditional paper folds transforming into flowers and animals, has released a new video showcasing the creative process behind his work.
This animation, which is also shortlisted for the 97th Oscars in the Animated Short Film category, showcases real origami techniques: every element you see can be folded from a sheet of paper. In the video on top of the article, you can get an inside look at the film's centerpiece, the creation of the sakura tree, and even though it's literally a behind-the-scenes look, it still looks like magic.
To develop a unique 3D animation workflow that accurately simulates the art of paper folding, Kei drew on his passion and experience, having been an origami artist since the age of 6. Watch the making of Origami video and the full animated short below:
