PolyPaint shared a new guide on achieving the 90s anime aesthetic using Grease Pencil.
Sergey Samarskiy, a 3D Generalist and creator of the PolyPaint YouTube channel, has shared a new comprehensive tutorial explaining how to achieve the visual aesthetic of 90s anime in Blender using its Grease Pencil tool.
In the guide, the artist discussed Studio Ghibli's approach to the creation of their animated movies, spoke about painting characters and backgrounds in Blender, and explained how to achieve the 90s-style imperfections on the compositing stage, in the end producing an authentic recreation of one of the shots from Princess Mononoke.
Additionally, the creator shared a Blender 4.3 file that includes Grease Pencil animations, a background painting process, compositor settings, and a detailed setup to explore 2D animation techniques in Blender, which you can download for free here.
