Learn How Marmoset Toolbag 5's Bevel Shader Can Boost Your Workflow

Marmoset's new guide focuses on how to skip the time-consuming process of adding edge loops for subdivision control by procedurally generating beveled details directly within your material.

Nathan Young

Marmoset Toolbag 5 was released last October, but if you haven't started using it in fear of getting frustrated by its new features, don't worry: there are plenty of official tutorials to help you get the hang of it quickly and easily. Earlier, we shared Marmoset's tutorial on vector layers, material layering, and a detailed step-by-step guide for creating realistic animated fire effects.

This time, Lead Designer Joe Wilson has prepared an in-depth article on Marmoset Toolbag's Bevel shader, which can help you skip the painstaking process of manually modeling beveled or rounded edges on your 3D meshes. This guide will be especially valuable for those working in hard-surface asset creation pipelines, but character artists and other designers will also find bevel shading useful in their workflows.

Marmoset

Bevel shading is a technique similar to normal mapping that adjusts normal directions along hard edges to give the illusion of a rounded edge. The edges of real-world objects tend to be chamfered or rounded over. Bevel shading is a quick way to add realism and believability to your models by mimicking this effect.

Marmoset's article covers the basics, including how to apply the Bevel shader, control its effect, render and bake it, key modeling considerations, potential conflicts with other workflows, and much more.
