Say goodbye to struggling with retopology or relying on proxy meshes to avoid issues caused by a few triangles, Fondant's Custom Normals is finally out.
Last week, we highlighted an amazing Blender add-on developed by Fondant that simplifies the process of achieving clean toon and cel shading, perfect for artists working on stylized game and VTuber models.
Right now, Custom Normals includes Weighted Normals and Laplacian Normal Smoothing, allowing you to achieve the same results on uneven triangulated meshes as on clean quad topology. The tool offers a non-destructive workflow, letting you see live results without the need to manually wire up materials or bake them. Also, it's entirely free, with more features on the way.
Next up is the Anime Face Proxy Mesh feature, which will enable you to transfer flawless, stylized face shading to your anime characters using a riggable, shape-adjustable face proxy.
Custom Normals works seamlessly in game engines and offers the ability to integrate with shape keys and create distinct normal effects on different parts of your mesh. You can access the full documentation here and take a look at the roadmap to see what's planned for future releases.
