Final Fantasy creators seem to have a clear stance on mods. Both Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth directors had given players friendly reminders not to make inappropriate mods.
But other than these formal statements, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the newly released Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, actually believes that mods bring something new to PC gaming.
Speaking to the Japanese video game news outlet AUTOMATON, the director said that he also uses mods while gaming. “I’m aware that mods have come to be accepted by the community and that they bring enjoyment to many players – I see it as a positive thing myself.”
In the interview with Epic Games Store back in December, Hamaguchi pointed out that the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake didn’t have planned in-game mod support; while respecting the creativity of modders, he had asked them “not to create or install anything offensive or inappropriate.” He clarified his statement with AUTOMATON, explaining that he wasn’t meant to tell players not to use mods. “It was more about being mindful. Both creators and users alike should ensure mods don’t detract from the intended game experience.”
“There are mods that could shock some players, so I encourage users to research what they’re installing and for creators to be mindful of their audience,“ Hamaguchi said.
Hamaguchi has reiterated his respect for the community. In his opinion, “mods have played a significant role in the rise of the PC market.” He uses examples of Fallout or The Elder Scrolls series, which have received numerous mods since they were launched. “New mods breathe life into these games, making players want to come back to them.”
FINAL FANTASY VII Rebirth Windows version was released on January 23, 2025, and it's now offering a special discount that will end in a few days.
