EU Asks Apple to Explain Why They Banned Epic Games' Developer Account

The response from Apple is yet to come.

As you may recall, in late January, Apple announced its commitment to complying with the Digital Markets Act by allowing third-party app stores on iOS for EU users. Epic Games planned to release a mobile version of the Epic Games Store on Apple devices to bring Fortnite back to iOS. Although Apple approved a new Epic Games developer account in February, it has since been removed.

Epic Games says that the reason may be Tim Sweeney's public criticism of Apple's monopoly position and the iPhone maker's unwillingness to face competitors.

As the whole ban situation does seem unfair, Epic Games has informed the European Commission of the recent problem.

According to the latest reports, the European regulator plans to investigate the deletion of the Epic Games developer account on iOS to determine if Apple has broken EU laws. Commenting on the matter to TechCrunch, the EU spokesperson shared that they've "requested further explanations on this from Apple under the DMA."

Thierry Breton, the EU's Internal Market Commissioner, has also commented on the dispute and urged developers to share their feedback on gatekeepers' compliance through Twitter.

"Under the DMA, there is no room for threats by gatekeepers to silence developers. I have asked our services to look into Apple's termination of Epic's developer account as a matter of priority," Breton wrote.

As for now, Apple has yet to comment on the situation.
