Arthur Munoz shared the process of creating large pixelated bosses for the recently released 2D metroidvania.
Last month, developer Kumi Souls Games and publisher Playstack shipped The Last Faith, a Unity-powered gothic 2D game described by the developers as "an unholy alliance of metroidvania and soulslike".
Following the release, Arthur Munoz, an experienced 3D Animator and Rigger, shared a series of demos providing a behind-the-scenes look at the game's bosses and showing how Starlight Beast of Illygarth was modeled, rigged, and pixelated.
According to Arthur, who was in charge of creating the 3D models, rigging, and animations, the workflow took place in 3ds Max and consisted of the rigging pass and the 3D model pass, followed by two manual pixel art passes to achieve the desired 2D appearance for the creature. The artist also disclosed that both pixel art passes were executed by hand, without resorting to the use of shaders.
