Miriam Frosoni unveiled an impressive hand-painted scene inspired by the Airborn Showcase.
Take a peek at "Just a Peek", a cozy and charming stylized 3D forest scene created by 3D Artist Miriam Frosoni as part of her environment art mentorship with Simone Silvestri. Inspired by the Airborn Showcase, an NPR animation unveiled back in 2022 by Airborn Studios, Miriam's environment stands out with its impressive hand-painted textures, made using Photoshop for the foliage and Substance 3D Painter for the other models.
Additionally, the artist utilized a combination of ZBrush, Maya, Marvelous Designer, SpeedTree, and Unreal Engine 5 to handle the modeling, rendering, and lighting tasks. UE5's Nanite was also used in production, allowing for a higher poly count on certain meshes, like some of the plants, which Miriam wanted to appear thicker and smoother.
"[This] work put me to the test and led me to learn many new things, from how to create a clever and useful master material in Unreal (such as materials with texture or resolution variation linked to the distance of the camera, or the use of virtual texture to blend with the landscape), to how to improve my skills in composition and storytelling," commented the creator.
Besides the final project itself, Miriam has also shared a couple of insightful video breakdowns, showing how the forest was set up and how the rock material was made:
