Chief Meta Researcher Describes Concerns Over AI as "Complete BS"

AI is nothing to worry about, says a person with a vested interest in the advancement of AI.

Amidst numerous protests against artificial intelligence and droves of flesh-and-blood workers losing their jobs to machines, Chief AI Scientist at Meta and one of the "Godfathers of AI", Yann LeCun, has claimed that the advancement of AI is not a major concern and that people shouldn't be overly worried about its power.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, LeCun described people's concerns about artificial intelligence as "complete BS," stating that modern LLM-driven AIs are dumber than a cat. He also introduced the idea that AI researchers are generally on the wrong track in advancing the technology, suggesting that adding in more data and building increasingly larger data centers is not the right approach. Because of that, LeCun is convinced that today's AIs aren't truly intelligent, while at the same time praising the technology for its profitability for Meta.

That last part of the above paragraph seems particularly interesting, considering the subject matter. Hearing that AI is not dangerous from someone with a vested financial interest in the advancement of AI doesn't sound too reassuring, the conflict of interest is just too apparent to ignore.

Furthermore, LeCun's perspective suggests that he believes people's concerns revolve around scenarios similar to The Terminator or I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, with machines becoming a bit too intelligent. In reality, though, it's clear that people's worries are usually more mundane, such as whether they'll have a job tomorrow or if they'll be able to find clients to purchase their artwork. You know, things Chief Meta Scientists may not make out from the tops of their ivory towers.
