Matthew Trevelyan Johns shared an awesome breakdown of one of the shaders created for The Last of Us 2.

The artist worked on the game as vehicle specialist and also as a texture and shader artist. He shared a breakdown of small area cocreated with Edgar Martinez (modeling and layout) and Scott Greenway (Lighting), plus other members of the Naughty Dog team.

The GIF below shows painting a single mesh with two shaders applied to it. "You can see the seam between both shaders at the start of the video, but my cement 'transition blend' covers this before I proceed to add further details," noted the artist.

The artist's main responsibilities were creating creation and applying textures and shaders for environments and contained assets. "The levels ended up being so huge that I also did quite a bit of modeling and additional set dressing, working back and forth with Edgar, to continually push and improve each other's work," wrote Matthew. "I also spent a lot of time in researching a new asset pipeline for which these levels became our testing ground."
