In the meantime, the long-awaited remaster has surpassed 180K concurrent players on Steam.
Following the disastrous launch of Fallout 76 and the underwhelming experience that was Starfield, Bethesda now appears to be making an effort to restore its public image and regain goodwill from the gaming community, and thanks to the long-awaited release of Oblivion Remastered, that effort seems to be going better than anyone could've anticipated.
Getting even more karma points, Bethesda recently reaffirmed its support for the modding community – widely credited as a key factor in the studio's long-term success – by gifting free Oblivion Remastered keys to the entire development team behind Skyblivion, the legendary WIP mod that aims to remake the 2006 game using Skyrim's engine.
As revealed by the Skyblivion team itself, Bethesda gave free game keys to all the modders working on the fan remake, something the team – mostly comprised, to no one's surprise, of die-hard Oblivion fans – deeply appreciated.
Even more encouraging, Skyblivion developers said that Bethesda is fully supportive of both remakes existing side by side and has shown no signs of wanting to shut the project down, a stance that has left the community thrilled, especially in light of to the approach another AAA studio with a huge release slated for 2025 takes toward modding efforts.
In the meantime, despite no marketing campaign on Bethesda's part (probably), Oblivion Remastered itself has instantly become the talk of the town, earning the title of perhaps the most successful shadow-dropped game of all time. Despite launching on Tuesday – right in the middle of the workweek – and carrying a hefty $50 price tag, the game easily managed to hit over 180K concurrent players on Steam, highlighting the community's overwhelming interest in the release.
Furthermore, as far as Steam is concerned, the remake/remaster has also become the 7th-best-performing video game of 2025 – outpacing several other major AAA titles released this year, including Assassin's Creed Shadows, Civilization VII, and Avowed – and has every chance to beat Split Fiction's 259K, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II's 256K, and Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced's 187K come the weekend.
