Manufacturers are struggling with the gadget's complex design.
According to the Financial Times, Apple is cutting its Vision Pro production goals since the innovative device's intricate design is making it difficult for manufacturers to produce. The report, which cited unnamed sources close to Apple and Luxshare Precision Industry Co., states that Apple is currently prepared to produce less than 400,000 pieces of the gadget in 2024.
The publication quoted two Chinese component suppliers as saying that Apple has delayed plans for a more affordable model and only needed parts for 130,000 to 150,000 units in the first year. The previous internal target was to sell 1 million units in the first 12 months.
The Vision Pro, revealed last month, will have its own operating system, visionOS, and a dedicated App Store. The device will be launched early next year in the US, followed by other regions later. A major challenge for its production is the high-resolution inward display which projects the wearer's eyes to the outside world. The micro-OLED displays for the prototypes in the June demonstration were supplied by Sony and the chipmaker TSMC, according to two people familiar with the situation.
The Financial Times also mentioned that Apple is also working on a more affordable version of the headset with Korean display makers. In June, Apple unveiled its Vision Pro headset, which combines AR and VR capabilities and comes with a hefty price tag of $3,500, which was met with mixed reactions.
