Created in Blender by the one and only, Cherylynn Lima.
Cherylynn Lima, an immensely talented Senior Character Artist whose 3D characters with painterly vibes impressed us on more than one occasion, continues the series by paying tribute to Studio Ghibli's timeless classic, a 2004 animated fantasy film, Howl's Moving Castle.
Offering a stylized take on the movie's namesake character, wizard Howl, the character was box modeled rather than sculpted and textured to give it a hand-painted-like appearance – a workflow the artist herself describes as "fun and freeing." True to form, Cherylynn employed Blender to handle every stage of production.
Perhaps the most striking feature of the portrait is Cherylynn's rendition of Howl's hairstyle, which comes as no surprise given the artist's expertise in stylized 3D hair. Previously, Cherylynn impressed us with several variations of low-poly Jinx braids, each more detailed than the last, based on geometry that one could easily hand-paint.
If you would like to learn more about Cherylynn and her production pipeline, we highly recommend checking out our recent interview with the artist, who told us about the Black Gold Girl project, discussed the modeling, hand-painting, rigging, and animation workflows in Blender, and detailed her experimental shading technique.
