3DCoat Adds Photogrammetry Support With RealityCapture Integration

3DCoat 2024.30 also updates the Sculpt toolset and adds a new feature to convert normal maps into real geometry.

Pilgway has officially launched 3DCoat 2024.30, a significant upgrade to its sculpting, retopology, and 3D painting software. The key highlight of this release is the addition of photogrammetry support through the integration with Epic Games' RealityCapture, offered for free to indie developers.

Users can now access RealityCapture's functionality directly within 3DCoat, allowing them to generate 3D models from photos or videos of real-world objects. The resulting 3D scans can then be modified and retopologized using 3DCoat's tools.

3DCoat's Sculpt toolset introduces two new tools for creating arrays of 3D objects: Array and Surface Array. The Array tool enables users to create various arrays of volume objects along curves, while the Surface Array tool distributes them across a created surface or on selected faces of a low-poly mesh.

The Paint toolset also gets updates with a new option to convert the normal map to actual geometry. Take a look at how this feature allows one to restore the original high-resolution sculpt from a retopologized low-resolution 3D model:

Additionally, with 3DCoat 2024.30, users can now perform volumetric boolean operations with an added shell. This feature is particularly important for 3D printing, as it allows for the precise creation of matching parts in 3D models.

This release also includes many other smaller updates, such as support for PBR texture information (color, gloss, metal) when importing or exporting raw voxel data from 3DCoat.
